Live at Vic’s Las Vegas: Jalen Baker & Jason Hainsworth & Friends
April 10th & 11th
The Jason Hainsworth Quintet featuring Jalen Baker — including Helen Sung (Piano), Jeff Denson (Bass), and Dezron Claiborne (Drums).
This collaboration is especially meaningful: Hainsworth and Baker are uncle and nephew, and their familial bond translates into a rare musical intimacy onstage—equal parts trust, conversation, and creative risk. The quintet’s repertoire blends original compositions with inspired interpretations connected to the legacy of artists like Joe Henderson and Bobby Hutcherson, tailored for attentive jazz club audiences.
Jason Hainsworth is an American jazz saxophonist, composer, and educator from Houston, Texas. Rooted in the Texas tenor tradition, his work blends swing, bebop, blues, and contemporary jazz influences. He has performed internationally as a bandleader and sideman and recorded with leading artists across the modern jazz scene such as Ulysses Owens, Jonathan Blake, Michael Dease, and written for Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Hainsworth serves as Associate Dean for Community Development and Executive Director of the Roots, Jazz, and American Music (RJAM) program. He is widely respected for his artistry, leadership, and commitment to jazz education and cultural legacy.
Featured vibraphonist Jalen Baker adds a luminous, contemporary sound marked by lyricism, groove, and harmonic clarity. Voted as one of the top young jazz vibraphonists on the scene today, Baker is one of the most in demand musicians working, both as a leader and sideman. Having toured the world as a member of the Jeremy Pelt quartet, Baker has most recently made his Blue Note records debut as a member of the Johnathan Blake Quintet. In addition he has several albums under his own name.
This performance is sponsored in large part by the Jazz Roads Grant by SouthArts.
